Founded in 1901 as a manufacturer of small internal-combustion engines for farm equipment and boats, the Cushman Motor Works added motor scooters to its product line in 1936. Filling a gap between bicycles and motorcycles, the Cushman scooter was popular among high school students, adults (as an economical "second car") and small businesses.

Another option might be to locate a chassis off of a Cushman 53A (civilian airborne) or one of the civilian Model 30 or 50 series as a starting point and make the appropriate changes. The military M53 was a modification of the commercial models Cushman was building at the time, including the engine.

The company grew slowly until WWII. During WWII they made three models of Cushman scooters: the model 32 as shown, a model 39 three-wheeler and a model 53 airborne that was parachuted out of aircraft. I am restoring a 1944 airborne at the present time. Only 7,534 of these were made. Mine is the 387th unit made.
